monday verse: long lion days

Long lion days
Start with white haze.
By midday you meet
A hammer of heat –
Whatever was sown
Now fully grown,
Whatever conceived
Now fully leaved,
Abounding, ablaze –
O long lion days!

Long Lion Days by Philip Larkin

This little poem by Philip Larkin seems very appropriate, as we’re in the middle of a heatwave – a canicule as it’s called in France. The “hammer of heat” at midday certainly strikes a chord. We’ve been getting things done in the morning and late evening, and retreating inside during the middle of the day. It’s just too hot to do anything if you don’t have to. Whisper it quietly, but I’m actually pining for drop of rain.

  1. So apt for the moment! I love these Long Lion Days but my little balcony of herbs would like a drink of real rain ….

  2. I have to confess that I’m wilting in the heat a little. The really high temperatures are supposed to be falling on Wednesday, so hoping the forecast is right.
