weekly photo challenge: layers

These are the steps leading up to the terrace behind La Petite Maison. When we first moved in, they were buried beneath layers of accumulated leaf fall, and we had no idea that they were actually a substantial set of stone steps. They lead down to a smaller stone terrace, which is where I’m standing to take the photo, and another set of steps takes you down to ground level, and the lane which runs past the house. The lower terrace and steps are still covered in leaf mould. One of our jobs for the winter is to clear them, hopefully revealing more stonework.

  1. What beautiful moss on the steps. Do you have any idea how old the steps and terrace may be? You made a spectacular find under the leaves. Best wishes, and stay warm, WG

    1. We think the house dates from mid 19th century, but the terrace and steps are a later addition, possibly 1950s. All done sympathetically using local materials though.
